This might depend on when he had purchased them..Some Brokers do not allow Buy Today Sell Tomorrow..I think such is the case of HDFC Securities..

May be this might help..

Better will be to contact Relationship manager of HDFC.

If the facility is not present just place a sell order for whole and a buy order for half at a particular trigger and stop loss price. Please note that this will invite extra commission/brokerage.

Surprising

You should be having the right to sell when u holding a security .... Check the terminal /web portal thoroughly.. u should be having a sell option.. Or probably they might have blocked the shares if any pending dues like yearly account maintainence charges..etc
If not..
Then as alder has indicated... that would be the best option

I don’t know why it happens, but today i call them and sell a single piece of share through them for test and it got executed, but when i tried to sell by logging in ,its again not taking the order. i think they have blocked selling of my own ,they did it deliberately so that they can get commission when i sell through them. ICICI also did same thing in my account,I have to go to their office to make it activated and it take nearly 2-3 months after many follow up

I had some scrips in varied amount in HDFC 2 yrs back.
I got all shares transferred to my IndiaBulls account , for normal selling buying.
