Established axiom among economists - when debt to GDP reaches 90% or higher slowdown is inevitable Why? My guess is due to the 'crowding out' effect of pvt capital (that drives growth & investment) due to higher govt borrowings. Also the inflationary impact of rising deficit itself (+ hugher govt demand) drives up cost of capital discouraging investments. Inflated fisc also erodes the currency resulting in higher cost of imports (or 'imported inflation').
