Unless the books ( accounts etc ) are squeaky clean , its very difficult to speculate on future earnings. Most are advertised to the contrary. One may need insider access to know what's really lying beneath.Still visiting respective company's web pages wherever available would be a good source to start with. They contain the company's plans and performance in a nutshell in the form of address by the CEO to the investors/shareholders in the AGM etc.Then one also has to do research on the emerging market scenario, as to what developments are taking place and who are the players etc.Then one can weigh the ratios and draw a rough conclusion.

Has to be seen in the light of sectoral fundamentals & past performance Like if some telecom company says it's going to deliver 30% earnings growth nxt yr that'll be highly suspect as the sectoral fundas point to below avg (even negative for some) earnings growth. (A niche player may still manage to do it though but better to remain conservative & watch performance q-o-q)

rightly said, all are a part of the bigger whole, when the overall economy is tanking, any sector is bound to sink in with that. as u rightly pointed out the smaller sectoral outlook also plays a role.

Some companies hold conference calls with analysts and then post the transcripts on their web-sites.

Some companies have a stated policy of not giving guidance! Hindustan Unilever is one such.

Yeah the order for me is Macro->Sectoral->Micro (Niche is a sub-category of sectoral)

Rare instance where less alleged "information" is wanted:

‘Don’t talk so much,’ bond traders want RBI to tell govt

Quote:
... bond traders, seemingly beleaguered by too much news and the resultant volatility in the market, now want RBI to tell the government to observe some restraint and “filter” comments on interest rates and liquidity, which have a bearing on the bond market.

Quote:
RBI officials don’t make explicit comments about monetary policy in the manner of the finance ministry.

Quote:
... the finance ministry has every right to comment on policy issues, but the ministry officials should exercise restraint while making such comments. With RBI, the organization responsible for framing monetary policy, neither supporting nor denying the views, there is uncertainty in the bond market ...

You can do it yourself using DCF Estimates;

even in Fundamental Analysis there are 2 schools of thought one of them is efficiency and other is top line growth.

DCF is calculated on based on claculating present value discounting future growth, but however estimation is an laborious and risky process so is estimation of efficiency but it is less risky ones. example for topline growth is Airtel while example for efficiency based companies are herohonda, asian paints and many more FMCG Companies etc.
