Do note that the kindle is not a good device to read pdfs. If you want to read pdf ebooks, then you should get a big screen tablet. Kindle's 6" screen is too small to properly display a PDF format ebook.

With tablets, the 8" mipad & ipad mini are good, but i would strongly advice to go for a 9.5" or larger screened tablet (e.g. the full sized ipad air 2)

In my experience, the kindle e-ink devices are great for reading ebooks that are formatted in epub or mobi format. If you have a epub format ebook, then you will need to use a convertor like calibre to convert it to mobi as the kindle does not handle the epub format natively.

Amazon also provides a service where you could email files in various formats to your kindle id and the same will be converted and synced across all of your devices.

I got the following query in a PM, but i felt that answering it here would help others:

My question is- is it impossible to read from basic kindle in the dark ?

The basic kindle's e-ink display is designed to behave like regular paper. It requires ambient light to read on that. The paperwhite models have a frontlight, that makes it look like the backlight on a laptop/tablet/phone.

You can not read these in complete darkness, but they are perfectly readable using a torch or a bedside lamp. Just like you would read any printed book.

The paperwhite models are the best of both worlds, with a light for reading in dark/low light and with a e-ink display for reading when you have ambient light available. Plus with the paperwhite models, you get really long battery life.

The good part of this e-ink display is that unlike tablets or laptops, they are perfectly readable under bright sunlight. But the bad part is that you need an external light for reading in dark.

If you have a tablet or mobile phone with the kindle app, then mostly you could switch over the the tablet or mobile phone when reading in dark and use the kindle for reading under light. Kindle's sync will keep the books synced between devices.

The regular e-ink display on the cheapest kindle devices have lower contrast than the paperwhite models and the resolution is also quite low, so fine drawings and charts will not look too good on them.

A high resolution good screen with Moon Reader Pro is as good as kindle

Then iPad Mini vs. Kindle PW riddle !!!

Kindle regular eink and paperwhite are more or less useless for reading pdfs. I have a regular kindle and while it does supports pdf reading, it is not usable for reading ebook pdfs.

As a rule of thumb, i would recommend:

For eBooks - i.e. in ePub & Mobi format
. Kindle eink or paperwhite - very very good if you want something that is light, easy on the eyes and which has a battery that lasts long
. Kindle and other e-reader apps on phones and tablets - does the job, but will end up eating a lot of your phone's battery
. Any 7" or higher res tablet to read comfortably - If you already have one, then you might as well use it.

For PDF ebooks
. < 8" screen sized tablets, phablets, phones and all regular sized (6") kindle devices and similar eink based ebook readers will not work. Do not get these devices if you want to read PDF ebooks.

. 8" high res tablets like ipad mini retina, mipad or nokia tablet. These will work, but for a lot of books, the pages can end up looking too small. Any such tablet with regular resolution screen will be too small to read comfortably

. 9.5" or higher res tablets with normal screen - You may need to do a bit or zooming, etc. but overall this is ideal size for reading ebooks. I have a ipad 2 which does the job, but it is a bit heavy

. 9.5" or higher size high res tablets that are thin and light. e.g. ipad air 2- These are ideal devices for reading ebooks. These are pricey devices and you cant easily get any cheap device in this category.

I think, getting a 500 odd page book better be printed and binded costing ~300 Rs., is a better solution.
12 books a year @3,600 Rs. and it is even much less than the depreciation cost of an iPad @30 K ++.
I can also read this while basking in the sun in winters,

After a few years these plunderer might come-up with some better and viable gadget. :hope:

1. Here is the comparison of Nook and Kindle . If you are particular on pdf alone Nook is sufficient . If you use Calibre you can convert kindle books to other formats and use it on Nook .

http://nook.barnesandnoble.com/u/noo...ader/379004122

2.If I am going to purchase Kindle I will do the following . The kindle basic version now is readable under the sunlight too . Only drawback is no inbuilt light for night reading . I will use a pen torch or a bed lamp with led light .

1000s of free books are available from the kindle store. This includes tons of out of copyright books. I remember reading a complete collection of sherlock holmes for free on kindle. Same for books from shakespere, charles dickens, etc. There are other sources of free ebooks in epub and mobi format. e.g. www.gutenberg.org

90% of the books i read as a child are available for free on the kindle. To me, a kindle is a perfect gift for a child who likes to read. Buy one and load it with a bunch of free classics that you can get on he kindle store and then gift it to a kid.

Also most books are cheaper on the kindle store unless you are looking to purchase the pirated printed docs.
