Default which monitor to BUY?

From this month’s market crash, I am planning to upgrade my monitors. Need a 2-screen setup from a single 20” screen which I am using now and not a cockpit of a fighter plane. By the way, I use a laptop too for execution.

I went to a friend’s place to experience a dual 27” screen setup. It did look good initially and gave me a feeling of CONTROL. But after couple of hours in front of it, I felt like I was in a upper-stall of a movie theatre and watching ROBOT of Rajnikant. My friend said you will get used to it. TRY it!

But I am actually getting confused in many aspects:
  • Which brand? Dell or Samsung or any other great brand to try out? It should be easily compatible with the existing hardware.
  • 27 or 24 inches monitor (is 27 too big to handle with less than 2 feet distance between eyes and monitor)
  • 2560x1440 resolution with 1000:1 contrast or 1920x1080 resolution with 3000:1 contrast.
  • Any other factor to keep in mind?

If you are trading a system with just one symbol, then a laptop screen is more than enough!

More symbols may need more screens, but why dont you look at a projector or a big 50 inch TV?

Those typically wont go above 1920x1080 (1080p full hd). 4k tvs and projectors are very expensive.

For trading, more than screen size, it is resolution that matters. You want to get monitors to maximize the total number of pixels across monitors.

These days there are a lot of monitors available with 1920x1080 resolution in various sizes. For use in a desktop, 21.5" size is decent enough for 1920x1080 resolution. Larger monitors with that resolution is mostly a waste on a desktop.

For most traders 2 or 4 21.5" monitors with a 1920x1080 resolution would be sufficient. To mount 4 monitors, you can use a multi monitor stand like this: http://www.amazon.com/Standing-Monit.../dp/B003D7FC8M These stands will work with virtually any monitor out there. Graphics cards supporting 4 monitors are not that difficult to find. Or else get 2 27" monitors with 2550x1440 resolution.

I use a combo of a 13" laptop screen and a 27" screen with 2560x1440 resolution. I dont feel that i need to keep my 27" screen further away than a regular screen. Both the screens are kept at the same distance. I have never felt the need to keep the 27" monitor any further away than any other monitor I would use.

Hi whatsinthename, nice buying

Did you buy them directly from Dell and how much did you pay for them ?
Ebay is showing price of around Rs 18000 -

i bought it for 17500/- from a DELL exclusive shop.

snapdeal/ebay/flipkart (90% costlier than local retail shops) and others are good for getting a price feel and comparison. once you get the feel, confirm and triangulate the info with local dealers and close the deal with some bargain saying others are giving for 17700/- - how much you give me for

one more choice cud be U2312HM for around 14700/- of 23" with 1920 X 1080 instead of 24" with 1920 X 1200 of U2412M!

Dell U2414H seems most suitable for traders. Very thin border so can be used in a multi monitor setup. Price is 18k on flipkart.

Ergotron seems to provide really good multimonitor stands but don't seem to be available in India.
