This is the hardware section. A lot of traders do have specific computer hardware requirements that other traders can better answer than a general hardware forum can.

Just so that people dont get mislead by what is there on this thread, here are some facts about SSD:

Quote:
The SSD completely destroys the mechanical disk in application launch times, and these results aren't just numerical, they are very noticeable in using the system. The SSD is noticeably faster in application launches, accessing files in Finder and spotlight searches. After I used the SSD MacBook Air, I tossed the standard HDD back in and honestly thought something was wrong - it felt significantly slower, despite feeling mostly "fine" before I was exposed to the SSD.

Quote:
For the money, there is no other system upgrade that will give you the performance boost of an SSD. That goes for consumers and data centers alike.

source: http://www.computerworld.com/s/artic...rth_the_money_

I have used SSDs on my computers for the past 4 years. My 4 year old computer with SSD feels faster than almost any modern computer with a spinning hdd.

A good quality SSD will be the single biggest speed upgrade for any modern desktop or laptop. Once you use a SSD, you will never want to go back to a computer with a regular spinning hdd.

Noob Questions :
1.So if we install our trading and charting applications in SSD we can see a better performance and
it will be better if we load all other applications and files of secondary importance and movies in HDD so that they wont affect the performance of SSD .
2. Recommend good SSDs with low and normal prices .

Install your OS and all of your applications on a SSD. For traders, I would also recommend keeping all databases on a SSD.

Media files like videos and movies are best kept off a SSD as you never need to access them for watching. Photos can also be kept on a regular HDD. But if you are doing any kind of video editing or if you are doing lots of post processing work with your photos, then keep them on the SSD.

General guideline is simple. Keep your OS, applications and all active data on a SSD. Keep media and files that dont change on a spinning hdd.

Recommending SSD is a big problem. You cant find most brands here in India. Mostly you would stick to Intel or Samsung ones. General guideline is to look at SSD reviews on Anandtech and then come up with a list of probable SSDs. After that check with your regular hardware vendor and online sources like flipkart for availability of various models. Buy the best one available here in India. SSD is still a rapidly developing technology and you can see new models come out very often.

Another option is to get an OEM SSD when you buy a new computer. Get a model that comes with a SSD built in. If you are purchasing Apple computers, then almost all current models come with SSD.

A hybrid SSD + spinning drive like seagate momentus xt is also a good option for those looking for some speed boost w/o wanting to spend the money for a SSD. These are marginally more expensive than regular spinning hdds and they do give a speed bump over the regular hard disks. No matter what the drive manufacturers would claim, they are not as fast as SSDs.

BTW.. I would not recommend getting cheap SSDs. Do a full survey and get ones that come with decent reviews. Pay a bit more for the ones with better reviews. The price difference between good and not so good SSDs are not very big, but the performance difference can be huge. Just make sure that you get the exact same model as reviewed. Different generations can have the same general model numbers, but differ widely in price and performance.

On the contrary, it is the single best upgrade that you can do to a system. An SSD will help almost every user of a system.

A SSD is one of those upgrades that you may feel is not required. But once you start using a SSD, you will instantly notice the lack of an SSD in computers not equipped with one.

A SSD will make your computer feel significantly faster.

Get an SSD on any new computer you buy. These days it is not that expensive and for most users a SSD makes more sense than a faster CPU.

hi

not interested. wastage of money.i told earlier performance enhancement is not needed in my daily computing.
its subjective matter and depends upon personal choice.

ie. the way HW vendors earn.
thx

You are not interested in SSDs and you think that they are a waste of money.

How about you let others decide for themselves. You clearly dont have enough first hand experience with quality SSDs to know how good they can be.
