black Defence stocks rally up to 20% after Modi's 'Make in India' pitch

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Make in India' pitch resonated on the Street with defence stocks such as Bharat Forge, Pipavav Defence, L&T and Astra Microwave Products rallying up to 20 per cent in trade on Wednesday.

Inaugurating Aero India 2015 in Bengaluru, the prime minister said his government did not want India to be the biggest importer of defence equipment in the world and vowed to double output of defence manufacturing in the country.

The comment bolstered these stocks. Pipavav Defence rose as much as 19.8 per cent in trade to touch its fresh 52-week high of 82.80, followed by Astra Microwave Products, which saw a 11.4 per cent jump.

At 12:40 p.m., Pipavav Defence was trading 14.2 per cent higher at Rs 78.95. It hit a low of Rs 70 and a high of Rs 82.80 in trade today.

Astra Microwave Products was trading 10.9 per cent higher at Rs 146.50. It hit a low of Rs 133.70 and a high of Rs 147.10 in trade today.

Bharat Forge was trading 3.3 per cent higher at Rs 1214. The stock surged nearly 4 per cent to hit its fresh 52-week high of Rs 1221.85 on the Bombay Stock Exchange.

L&T was up nearly 1 per cent to trade at Rs 1665.90.

Analysts across brokerage firms are of the view that Indian government, which is pushing hard with its 'Make in India' campaign to woo foreign investors to set up their shops in India, could be a game-changer for defence related stocks.

India's defence budget is the ninth-largest in the world and the country is the largest importer of defence equipment. The government spends close to $40 billion annually on the defence budget.

Modi said the Centre was keen to expand the role of private sector for Indian defence production and that preference would be given to defence products made locally.

"We do need to increase our defence preparedness. We do have to modernise our defence forces," he said. "If we could raise ..

Modi said even a 20-25 per cent decrease in defence import can create 2 lakh jobs. Also, a 25 percent hike in domestic defence output can create 1 lakh skilled jobs, he said.

Analysts said the recent policy developments, such as increase in foreign direct investment ( FDI) limit to 49% from 26%, will result in an increase in order activities over the next 2-3 years.

Award of silent out-performer in this sector has to go to BEL. It has gone from around 1000 (Apr 2014) to 4000+ (Feb 2015) and is showing no signs of slowing down... It is expected to touch 7000-8000

That is well known (even the name is a giveaway ) Another small 1 - Dynamatic Tech 5X in a year (poor volumes though).

SOLARINDS (same segment as Jazz's Premier) was around 900 a year back.
