News Roundup
• India’s benchmark index, Nifty fell by 2.19% for the
week ended 28th Nov 09, with savage cuts
coming in the last two days of trading. Global
Markets also witnessed sell off after news came in
that Dubai was battling a Debt crisis.
• Dubai debt troubles revived fears of financial
crisis. Dubai World, an investment company of
Dubai Govt, has requested extension for
repayment of USD 59 Bn worth of loans.
• The Finance Ministry said today that the financial
crisis in Dubai, triggered by a slump in real estate,
may not impact remittances sent by Indian

cent in October on better performance by
petroleum refinery products, cement, electricity
and finished steel. Petroleum refinery products
grew by 7.2%, electricity and finished steel
(carbon), the growth was 4.7 % and 1.1%
respectively and cement grew by 5.3%.
• Gold declined for the week, extending its retreat
from an all-time high as a stronger dollar damped
demand for the precious metal as an alternative
asset. Gold was trading at USD 1175 per ounce.
• Sugar production in sugar year 2009-10 is
expected to be higher than last year but it would
not be enough to meet the domestic consumption.
While sugar industry is projecting a production of

crushing by sugar mills in UP has started following
the industry agreeing to pay for sugar cane a price
higher than State Advised Price.
• Tariff war in telecom is intensifying with Reliance
communication cutting cost of SMS to 1
P/message.
