The stock exchanges are weighing the option of extending trading hours till 5.30 pm or 7.30 pm. Markets regulator Sebi said to be on board on the idea.

These days most brokers have a commodity & currency desk and so they have some staff working post nse and bse market hours.

There are various ways for brokers to supported extended market hours without increase in personnel costs.

The bigger issue is about day traders. Most of them currently trade for the full day, with many choosing to take breaks in between. We already have low volumes on most days post market open. Will this low volume period extend for longer time period, or will we end up with additional low volume periods through the day? We see this in the commodities markets, there are long periods of very low volumes in the commodities markets inspite of them being open for long hours.

Automated trading makes up for an increasing percentages of trades done in the markets. With longer market hours, exchanges would expect these automated algo trading systems to execute more trades and hence generate additional transaction fee for the exchange and clearing houses. We need to see if these algorithms can generate enough volumes in new market hours.
